If y varies directly as x, and y = 42 as x = 6, find y for the x-value 3

Remember k= y/x so y is 8 and x is 20

 

8/20 = 2/5

then you add this into the equation: x= k / y

insert your new x (10)

10 = 2/5(8)

viola!
