Problem: What is y = x + 2
What is y = x + 2
y = x + 2 is a linear equation. That means that
when you graph it, you get a straight line. Because
it is a line, there are an infinite number of points
along that line, each of which is a solution to the
equation. Pick any value for x, plug it into the
equation, and solve for the unique value of y. The
easiest point to find is the y-intercept, which is
repesented by the constant that is added to the x term
(as long as the co-efficient of y is 1). That occurs when
the value of x is zero. In this case, the y-intercept is 2.
So the point (0, 2) is one solution to the equation.
Examples:
5: y = x + 2 y = 5 + 2 y = 7
-11: y = x + 2 y = -11 + 2 y = -9
37.9: y = x + 2 y = 37.9 + 2 y = 39.9
