The fractions need to be replaced by whole numbers. The easiest way is to multiply the denominators together or to find their lowest common multiple (LCM).
By multiplying each fraction by this product or LCM all the fractions become whole numbers so the ratios can be expressed in terms of the whole numbers. If the whole numbers contain a common multiple (for example, they are all even) then the ratios can be reduced to their simplest form. For example:
9:12:18 ratio can be reduced to 3:4:6.
EXAMPLE OF FRACTION RATIOS
½:⅚:⅔
The LCM of these fractions is 6, so multiply each fraction by 6:
3:5:4
If, instead, we multiply by the product (2×6×3=36) we get:
18:30:24
6 goes into each of these whole numbers, so divide each by 6:
3:5:4
Either method works.
