If a<0 we have discontinuity in ax and, therefore, ax-2, because real ax-2 can only be calculated when x-2 is an integer. For example, if x=2.5 then we have the square root of a negative number. Therefore, we assume a>0:
ax+2-ax=a2,
ax(a2-1)=a2,
ax=a2/(a2-1),
xlog(a)=log{a2/(a2-1)},
x=log{a2/(a2-1)}/log(a).
