Do the calculation in brackets first: .85-2=-1.15. The minus sign outside the brackets makes this positive 1.15. Remember this result for later.

Next we do the division: 1.6/1.25. Problems dividing by a decimal? Make it simpler by multiplying top and bottom by 4: 6.4/5. Still a problem dividing into a decimal? Make it easier by multiplying top and bottom by 2: 12.8/10. To divide by 10 just move the decimal point one place to the left making 1.28. (We could have got there quicker by 8*1.6/8*1.25=12.8/10.) Remember the answer for later.

Do the multiplication: 2.5*3=7.5.

(We could have done the multiplication before the division.)

Put all the bits together: 7.5+1.28+1.15=7.50+1.28+1.15=9.93.
