It takes 3 min to form a bowl and 2 min to form a plate. A bowl costs 0.25; a plate costs 0.20. If it runs for 8 hours and $44 is spent in materials, how many bowls and plates can be produced?

3 mins to make a bowl,    bowl costs 0.25

2 mins to make a plate,    plate costs 0.20

Let B be the number of bowls produced.

  “   P  “     “        “       “  plates       “

Costs:

B * 0.25 + P * 0.2 = 44.00

Times:

B * 3 + P * 2 = 8 hrs = 480 mins

Multiplying the 1st eqn by 10, gives

2.5B + 2P = 440

3B + 2P = 480

Subtracting the eqns,

0.5B = 40

B = 80

2P = 480 – 3*80 = 480 – 240 = 240

P = 120

Production is: 80 bowls and 120 plates
