One way to multiply is to use tiles or squared paper.
If, for example, you want to multiply 3 by 5, arrange 5 tiles in a horizontal line, left to right, then, counting the first tile in line as 1 place two more tiles directly below it in a vertical line. Fill up the space in rows with tiles until you have a rectangle 5 by 3. Now count the tiles. There should be 15 tiles, so 3 multiplied by 5 (3×5) is 15.
If you don’t have tiles then use the squared paper and mark 5 squares in a horizontal line and 3 vertically, using the squares as if they were tiles. Fill up the rectangular space by putting a cross in each square, then count how many crossed squares you have.
The bigger the numbers you are multiplying the longer it will take you to count the squares or tiles, so it’s a good idea to learn the multiplication tables by heart!
If you don’t have tiles, you can use any objects. You end up by counting just the same number of objects as you would if they were tiles or squares.
