Word problem asking me to find the speed of people going opposite directions.
If 2 people are on bikes going opposite directions. They started at the same place at 9:00. At 10:30 they are 39km appart and one is going 4kph faster than the other. What are their speeds
This is a freshman Algebra 1 question and I thought I understood but now I am confused about how to do this because my dad started showing me some equations from calculous and it should be easier than what he is doing.
Speed of Two person A & B
A is faster than B
A = B + 4 kph » eq1
Time travelled = 10:30 - 9:00 = 1:30 » 1.5 h
A + B = 39 k /1.5 h » eq2
subtitute eq1 to eq2
(B + 4) + B = 39/1.5 kph
2B = 39/1.5 - 4
2B = 22
B = 22/2
B = 11 kph ◄ Ans
in eq1
A = B + 4
A = 11 + 4
A = 15 kph ◄ Ans
