Federal tax is 4% more than State tax.

Total for both Federal and State taxes is $12,240.

How much State tax was paid?

Let x = state tax

federl tax = x + x(0.04)

x + x + 0.04x = 12240

2.04x =12240

2.04x/2.04 = 12240/2.04

x = $6000 state tax

federal tax = x+x(0.04) = 6000+6000(0.04)= 6000+240 = $6240
