Linear Equation using substitution.

Question

Total sales on Wednesday at Daynite Submarines were $4200.  The restaurant makes a profit of 4% on meat submrines and a profit of 5% on veggie submarines.  The profit from meat submarines was $51 more than the profit from veggie submarines.  How much of the sales was accounted for by each type of submarine.

vegee profit=5% av y=0.05y

meet profit=4% av x=0.04x

meet profit=vegee pro+51$, so 0.04x=0.05y+51

0.04x=0.05*(4200-x) +51....or 4x=5*(4200-x)+5100

4x+5x=21,000+5100

9x=26,100, x=26,100/9...x=2900...(x=meet)

y=4200-x=4200-2900...y=1300
