Look at fraction, number at Bottom is denominator, number at top is numerator. Now Take Whole number in this case 18, 18 times 9 ( denominator ) and add Numerator, this gives the the numerator, denominator stays the same (9)  so answer is 162/9.

George is close, but 18 5/9 converted to its improper form is:

18 x 9 + 5
      9

= 167
     9

Check this answer by converting it back to proper form: http://statsfiddle.info/Fraction/ReducedFractions/167?denominator=9
