If you minus a negative number, it has the same effect as adding it as a positive number, i.e.

3/10 - (-) 1 1/3

= 3/10 + 1 1/3

Making both vulgar fractions:

3 / 10 + 4 /3

The LCM of the denominators, 3 and 10 is 30, so:

3 x 3 + 4 * 10
          30
=49/30

=1 19/30
