= 12

| | means we are taking absolute value. That means we do not care about negative signs if there are any.

Absolute value does not mean you don't care about signs. It means you only consider the integer's distance from 0 on the number line. By considering only the number's displacement from zero, it negates signs (+/-) and is treated as positive.
