my Question is i know there are parentheses which are ( ) but what are the Straight lines ? l  15 - 13 l x -5 mean ?

there is a straight line then 15 minus 13 and another straight line. then a multiple cation symbol with a -5 after.

how do i figure this out and what is the straight line.

|15 - 13| means to take the absolute value of 15 - 13.
The absolute value means the resulting number without the positive/negative sign.
For example, |15 - 13| is simply  2 in this case. However, |13 - 15| will also be 2. This is because 13 - 15 will result in -2, and we ignore the "-" sign and just take the value 2.

Hence, we have:

|15 - 13| x -5
= |12| x -5
= 12 x -5
= -60

|-10 + 11| (-2 - (-4))
= |1| (-2 + 4)
= 1 (2)
= 2
