what is "mean" in math and how do I come up with the correct answer?

I am a 5th grade student and  I need to know what "mean" means in math and how do I come up with my answer.

add up the numbers and divide by how many there are:

3,4,4,7,12

the sum is 30 divided by 5, the mean =6
by Level 5 User (12.9k points)
mean= average

add all the numbers and divide by the number  of numbers
by Level 9 User (42.6k points)
