distribute the 4 on the left so 4x-20+2 = x+3

combine like terms on the left so 4x-18 = x+3

subtract x on both sides so 3x-18=3

add 18 to both sides so 3x=21

divide both sides by 3 and x=7

4(x-5)+2=x+3

4x - 20 + 2 = x + 3

4x - 18 = x + 3

4x - x = 3 + 18

3x = 21

x = 21/3

x = 7
