All definitions quote a vertex is a corner where two straight lines meet, so in a triangular prism there are 18 corners, why not 18 vertices?

A vertex is a point where two straight lines meet.  In a triangular prism, for each vertex, three straight lines (say, A, B, and C) meet, which gives you 3 pairs of lines (AB, AC, BC).
