There are two equations we could write: one involving addition or subtraction and the other division or multiplication. First add/subtract: 32-24=8 or 32=24+8. 32 is bigger than 24 by an amount of 8.

Then divide/multiply: 32/24=4/3, and since 4 is bigger than 3 so 32 is bigger than 24. We could also write 24/32=3/4 and since 3 is smaller than 4 so 24 is smaller than 32. Since 4/3 is 1 and a third, 32 is a third bigger than 24, a third of 24 being 8.
