Substitute y=3x in xy=12 and we get 3x^2=12, so x^2=4 and x=+2. Therefore y=+6 because y=3x. That explains the two intersection points: x=2, y=6 and x=-2, y=-6. These are the intersection points (2,6), (-2,-6).
