2p-8=2⇒2p=10 (adding 8 to each side), so, dividing through by 2, p=5. To work out the general solution of |2p-8|=2, we need also to solve 2p-8=-2. 2p=6, so p=3. We can see that the absolute equation is satisfied by p=3 or 5.
