To add together fractions, we need to find a common denominator so that each fraction can be expressed in terms of that denominator. The best denominator to use is the least common denominator, which in this case is 24, because 8 and 6 both go into it. 5/6 is the same as 20/24 (divide 24 by 6 then multiply the result by 5) and 7/8=21/24 (24/8*7). Both fractions are in 24ths, so we simply add the new numerators together: 20+21=41 24ths or 41/24. This is an improper fraction, because the numerator is bigger than the denominator, so we can divide 24 into 41 and note the remainder 17, and this gives us 1 17/24.
