576 squares/280=2.05714285711428...

or bout 2 ft

perhaps sumwon figgered the reel area slitely bigger...

abuv ignore the 4 triangels at the korners

The area of the top of the pool is 60*80=4800 sq ft.

If the width of the non-slip area is X' then the area of the pool plus non-skid is (60+2X)(80+2X) because the length and width are each increased by twice the width of the non-skid material. This larger area is 4800+120X+160X+4X^2. Take away the pool area and we get 280X+4X^2=576. So X^2+70X-144=0. Using the method of completing squares we get X^2+70X+35^2=144+35^2 and X+35=√(144+1225)=√1369=37. So X=2'. It requires a 2-ft strip of non-skid material to use up the whole of the 576 sq ft provided.
