DIRECT PROPORTION

  1. 2 packets of candies cost $1. 5 packets cost 5/2=$2.50.
  2. A map of a town has a scale of 1cm = 50m. Two locations on the map are 2.5cm apart. The actual distance between them is 125m. 2.5*50=125.
  3. It takes me 20 minutes to walk to school 1 mile away. The shopping mall is 2.5 miles away. It takes me 50 minutes to walk to the mall. 2.5*20=50.

INVERSE PROPORTION

  1. My school is 3 miles away. It takes me an hour to walk there. If my mom drives me to school and her average speed is 30 miles per hour, it only takes 6 minutes. The time is inversely proportional to the speed.
  2. It takes 2 boys 5 days to build a tree house. It takes one boy 10 days to build the same tree house. The building time is inversely proportional to the number of boys involved in building.
  3. I can buy 6 boxes of the same candies in shop A for the same price as 5 boxes in shop B. The unit price is inversely proportional to the number of boxes I can buy.
