a. Choose the statement that best explains why the relationship is or is not proportional.

  • The relationship is proportional because the line passes through the origin.

  • The relationship is proportional because the line has a negative slope.

  • The relationship is not proportional because the line passes through the origin.

  • The relationship is not proportional because the line has a negative slope.

Question 2

b. Write an equation of the line. Interpret the slope.

The equation of the line is y=y=  3510 x. The slope indicates that the temperature decreases by °F for each 1000-foot increase in altitude.

Question 3

c. You are at the bottom of a mountain where the temperature is 74°F. The top of the mountain is 5500 feet above you. What is the temperature at the top of the mountain?

The temperature at the top of the mountain is °F

a. Answer 4.

b. y=-35x/10=-3.5x where x is thousands of feet. The slope means that there is a drop of 3.5℉ in temperature for each 1000 feet increase in altitude.

c. Put x=5.5 in the equation: y=-19.25℉. So the temperature drops to 74-19.25=54.75℉.
