Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers scored 40 points in a recent basketball game. He scored no 3-point shots, but made a number of 2-point field goals and 1-point free throws. He scored 24 times.

Let a=number of 2-pt goals and b=number of 1-pt free throws.

So 2a+b=40 points and a+b=24 goals. Therefore, a=24-b and substituting for a in the other equation:

2(24-b)+b=40, 48-2b+b=40, 8=b so the number of free throws is 8.
