When -3x2-x+24<0, its square root is complex, so 3x2+x-24>0, (3x-8)(x+3)>0, so 3x-8>0 and x+3>0; or 3x-8<0 and x+3<0.

Therefore, the square root is complex when x>8/3 or x<-3.
