For every proportion, the product of the extremes is always equal to the product of the means, i.e., a : b : : c : d if and only if ad = bc .

Here we have,

12:28::18:x

12x=28(18)

12x=504

x=504/12

x=42

42 ounces of beef broth is required to make 18 cups of soup.
