Draw the x and y sides of what is a right-triangle. You will find
that the lengths of the sides is the absolute value of the difference
between the values given in the co-ordinate pairs. By that, I mean
the lenght of the x side is |8 - (-4)| or |8 + 4|, which is 12. The length
of the y side is |-12 - 6| or |-18|, which is 18. Using the Pythagorean
Theorem, d^2 = x^2 + y^2, we have d^2 = 12^2 + 18^2.

d^2 = 144 + 324
d^2 = 468

d = √468
d = 21.63
