there are 7 gray kittens and 2 black kittens
7-2=5
There are 5 more gray kittens than black ones, which is the same as saying that there are 5 fewer black than gray kittens.

It is 5 because 7-2=5

Yes, yes, the answer is five, BUT if you follow grammar rules, then we can't answer this questions! Read it again:   "There are 7 gray kittens. Two kittens are black." How can two kittens be black when they are grey! The first sentence tells us that the kittens are grey. The way the second sentence is written tells the reader that OF the 7 gray kittens, two are black, which can not be physically possible because they are gray. Therefore, the question must be rewritten in order to properly solve this: There are 7 grey kittens AND two black kittens. This was a question on my daughter's first-grade math homework and it's embarrassing that this questions made it into the book. Horrible writing. This question should be rewritten before the next round of books are printed!
