how to make fraction into a mixed number

Let us start with an improper fraction, say, 73/7.

Subtract 70 from the numerator.

You subtract 70 because that is the biggest multiple of 7 (the denominator) which is smaller than the numerator. We then write,

73/7 = (70 + 3)/7

(70 + 3)/7 = 70/7 + 3/7

70/7 + 3/7 = 10 + 3/7

10 + 3/7 = 10 3/7, as a mixed fraction
