I've got this problem: 24x^3+40x^2-54x-90 I got as far as 2(12x^3+20x^2-27x-45) and I don't know how to proceed. Help please? I think these problems get harder as I go, so if there's a basic step-by-step for factoring polynomials, that'd be nice to know about too.

Alright so now you group them.

2( (12x^3+20x^2) (-27x-45) )

Next you find the GCF of each group of numbers.

2( 4x^2(3x+5) -9(3x+5) )

Next you put the outside numbers in one bracket and the matching numbers as another.

2( (4x^2-9) (3x+5) )

Then you use difference of squares method on the first group of numbers because they are both perfect squares and they are separated by a minus sign.

So (4x^2-9) becomes:

(2x-3) (2x+3)

So your final equation will be

(2x-3) (2X+3) (3x+5)

The course text describles factoring as "reversing the process" or multiplying polonomials.

Think about a situation in which you had to move forward to get a result, but then had to retrace your steps.

Example:  I know the age I would like to retire.  I need to work backward to determine how much I need to invest now and then to achieve my financial goals.

How does reversibility of thought give me new insight into the situation?

How can I use algebra to help me thing in reverse?

In what ways might thinking in reverse help me understand larger issues in society?

I was asked to explained this in a paragraph.  I need help!
