One more than the difference between 18 and seven times a number is -9.

Question

Translate this word problem into an equation. Then find each number/answer.

Example:

Eight less than 7 times a number is -29.

7x-8=-29

    +8    +8     -29+8=-21/7=3

3=x

18 - 7x = -10

-7x = -28

x = -28/-7 = 4

What did you do with the -10 and how did you get the -28 wothout already having the answer???

It's not clear whether it should be 18 - 7x or 7x - 18, it listed 18 first so that's how I tried it.
1 + (18 - 7x) = -9
subtract 1 from both sides:
18 - 7x = -10
subtract 18 from both sides:
-7x = -28
divide both sides by -7:
x = -28/-7 = 4
I should have explained each step when I first wrote my answer. Sorry.
