Let the smaller number be x.

Larger number=x * 4=4x (One number is  times as large as the other. )

Sum of numbers=40

Larger+smaller number=4x+x=5x

5x=40 (The sum of two numbers is  )

x=40/5=8

Smaller number=8

x+4x=40. 5x=40. x=40\5. x=8 8 is one of the numbers. To find the other number we must multiply 8 by 4 which equals to 32. so the numbers are 8 and 32. check - 8+32=40.
