i dont understand how to solve. please help

x^2 - 10x = 24

Half of -10 is -5, then -5 squared it 25

x^2 - 10x + 25 = 24 + 25

(x - 5)^2 = 49

x - 5 = +-7

x = +- 7 + 5

x = -2  or x = 12
