use the distributive property to multiply the 3 into the parenthesis,

3 times k is 3k

3 times -4 is -12

that leaves you with

3k-12+6=2

-12 plus 6 is -6

3k-6=2

add 6 to each side

3k=8

divide both sides by 3

k=8/3
