1) x + 2y = 7  or x = 7 - 2y

2) 3x + 5y = 17

substitute eq(1) into eq(2):

3(7 - 2y) + 5y = 17

21 - 6y + 5y = 17

-y = -4

y = 4

using eq(1):

x = 7 - 2(4) = -1

check using eq(2):

3(-1) + 5(4) = 17

-3 + 20 = 17

x = -1, y = 4
