Start with the smallest prime, 2, and keep dividing the remainder:

24

= 2 x 12

= 2 x 2 x 6

= 2 x 2 x 2 x 3

You would normally repeat this with the next prime (3), however, the remainder is only 3 which is prime and can't be factored further.
