x^3 - x^2  - x + 1 =x^2(x - 1 ) - 1 *( x - 1) =

 ( x - 1 )( x^2 - 1 )=( x - 1)( x - 1)( x + 1) = 0

x - 1 = 0 or x + 1 = 0

x = 1 or x = - 1
