Each ball is separated by a diameter (2r) from the ball beneath it. The centre of the top ball is a radius above the one below. So if there are 5 stacked balls the top ball is 4 diameters, 8r, from the ground from its base and an additional radius from its centre=9r. A sixth ball's centre would be 11r from the ground.
