Assuming x is the smaller number and y is the larger the problem gives you two equations. X=(Y/3)-2 And X+Y=50 Solve for Y first then use Y to solve for X. [(Y/3)-2] + Y = 50 1/3Y + 3/3Y = 52 4/3Y = 52 Y = (52*3)/4 Y = 39 X = 11
