to turn a mixed number into improper first multiply the whole number by the deminator, then add the numerator.

for example:  16  1/2

16x2 = 32   32+1 = 33

33/2 is the improper fraction note that it keeps the same deminator. you always check by dividing 33 into 2 the answer is 16.5 so it checks out.
