Question: solve the system 5x-y=11 y=3x-5.

5x - y = 11

y = 3x - 5

Substituting for y = 3x - 5 from the 2nd equation into the 1st equation,

5x - (3x - 5) = 11

5x - 3x + 5 = 11

2x = 6

x = 3

y = 3x - 5 = 9 - 5 = 4

Answer: x = 3, y = 4
