Good question. . . The thing I wonder about is the squares, which should happen between the stitches.  20 squares with 20 rows would seem to be a grid of 20 x 400, but the edges of the scarf need another line of stitches to close off the last squares, so it might be 21 * 401 = 8421 stitches. . .
