what does l-36l / 6 mean

Question

My young friend and I thought the answer was minus 6, but the soft schools.com said otherwise. What do the two lines aound -36 mean?

they mean absolute value which is defined as the distance from zero

so it is 36 (distance can't be negative)

then 36/6 = 6
