Why does the area of a rectangle have squared units?

The area of a square has squared units such as 24 in. squared, but I don't know why a rectangle has squared units when a rectangle is not a complete square.

actually the word squared units, come from unit^2 which equal to unit x unit. e.g. 6 unit x 4 unit = 24 unit^2
