plug x = 5 - y in for x into the first equation

8(5 - y) - 5y = 12

then 40 - 8y - 5y = 12

40 - 13y = 12

-13y = -28

y = 28/13

then x = 5 - 28/13 so x = 37/13

answer (37/13, 28/13)
