The slope is:  m= (Ysub2 - Ysub1) / (Xsub2 - Xsub1), where m is the slope of the line and Xsub1 is not equal to Xsub2.

Let the first ordered pair (1/4, -6) be called (Xsub1, Ysub1) and the second ordered pair (-2, 4) be called (Xsub2, Ysub2).

Substituting the values for the slope, we have

m = [4-(-6)] / (-2- 1/4)

m = 10 / (-9/4)

Therefore the slope m = 40/-9  or -4.444

In case you need to see how I got the difference of (-2 - 1/4), which is -9/4, here is now:  You need to subtract a fraction(1/4) from a whole number(-2). The denominator of -2 is 1.  Get the Least common denominator of 1 and 4 which is 4.  This will be the denominator of the difference.  Then 4 divided by 1 (the denominator of 2) is 4 then multiplied by -2 =-8.  Then 4 divided by 4 (the denominator of -1/4) is 1 then multiplied by -1= -1.  So (-8/4) - (1/4)= -9/4

CHANGE 1/4 TO .25

SLOPE OF TWO POINTS FORMULA: Y2-Y1/X2-X1

m= 4-(-6)/-2-.25

m=10/-2.25

m=--4.44444... or-40/9
