Should that be AC=2x+1 instead of AC+2x+1? We don't know what AB and AC are. Can you give us or describe what you have? A triangle? A straight line? A square? A rectangle? Any more information? Then I'm sure lots of people will be able to help you understand.

Assume AB and AC are sides of a square and AC=2x+1. Since the sides of a square are all equal AB=AC so x+17=2x+1. Rearranging: 16=x so AB=16+17=33 (which is also the length of AC).
