Problem: melanie left the city for vacation. mike left 3 hours later going 60 mph faster to catch up. after 2 hours mije caught up. what was melanie's average speed?
Distance, rate

d = s * t

d = s * 5hrs          <<< Melanie
d = (s + 60) * 2hrs   <<< Mike

Both traveled the same distance.

s * 5 = (s + 60) * 2
5s = 2s + 120
3s = 120
s = 40      <<< Melanie's speed
s + 60 = ??
40 + 60 = 100  <<< Mike's speed

40 * 5 = 200
(40 + 60) * 2 = 100 * 2 = 200

Answer: Melanie's average speed was 40 mph.

I don't think that having Mike travel
at 100 mph is a good idea.
