let a and b are the numbers we have a+b=17(1) and a-b=29(2)

adding both sides of the equations we have a+a+b-b=17+29  --->>>  2a=46 and a=23

subracting both sides we get; a-a+b+b=-12  ---->>>>  2b=-12  so b=-6
